1. Heavier EVs and Towing Allowed on Category B Licence

New UK Driving Licence Rules 2025: From 10 June 2025, standard Category B licence holders can legally drive electric and hydrogen vehicles up to 4,250 kg banana weight raised from the previous 3,500 kg limit. This update also allows towing heavier trailers, with a combined vehicle and trailer weight now up to 7,000 kg. The change supports the shift toward zero emission vehicles and simplifies day-to-day driving without the need for a new licence category.

2. Optional Digital Driving Licence via GOV.UK Wallet

In summer 2025, the UK will launch the GOV.UK Wallet app, enabling drivers to carry a digital version of their licence on their phone powered by facial recognition, two-factor authentication, and secure smartphone protections. This digital ID can be used to prove your age, hire a car, or even board domestic flights. It’s completely optional paper licences remain valid.

3. Enhanced Security & Privacy Controls

The digital licence will offer features like hidden address masking in public settings and the ability to remotely deactivate your licence if your phone is lost or stolen. Although older drivers have raised concerns about accessibility, robust biometric and multifactor safeguards aim to make it secure and inclusive.

What You Should Do Now

  • Check your entitlement: After 10 June, verify that your licence automatically reflects the new EV and towing weights.
  • Consider going digital: If you’re tech savvy, download the GOV.UK Wallet app later this year to add your licence to your phone.
  • Keep the paper/card licence: It’s still the legal standard retain it as your primary ID.
  • Stay informed: Keep up with updates from the DVLA and GOV.UK as more services join the digital rollout.
